Exhibited at the Evanston Art Center as part of La Jaula de Oro and Tormenta Fest x Chicago Latina Playwright Festival. Printing in blood and thinking about my fierce ancestors with me but also the women we need to be protecting. I’m using my La Virgen de Guadalupe relief from La Milagrosa as a talisman on the trenzas y cintas [braids and bows].
Through this work, printed in blood, I reflect on all the ways my fierce ancestors accompany me every step of the way on my life’s journey. The iconic braids of the Adelitas and the decorated braids of Mexicanas. I also reflect on the vulnerable women in custody, in border towns, and indigenous missing and murdered sisters who need our dedicated protection. The braids are elegant, but they’re fractured, and printed in blood.
